Our Dayton Domicile

This is my blog about the remodeling projects that will bring about the metamorphosis of our 1974 ranch into a beautiful home.  Here's picture of the exterior of our home in suburban Dayton, Ohio.

I bought this 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2,160 square foot home in February, 2012 so that we could reclaim a place back in the area, close to my husband's children, extended family and our friends.

The home included some remnants of an unexpected resident, termites, who had snacked on our drywall paper, but fortunately for us, not on our framing lumber.

Luckily, we had lots of help getting the drywall prepped including my husband, his son, and my father, and then the walls were made smooth and paint-ready with the expertise of our drywall finisher Lloyd.

The home has many of the 'classic' elements authentic to its' 1974 build date, including many lovely hanging light fixtures, white French Provencal style cabinets in both bathrooms.

Our first priorities last spring were to paint the home (all the rooms and hallways), with the exception of the two bathrooms, which will be next on the re-do agenda, after our kitchen.

We also re-carpeted the bedrooms, which still had their original green and gold sculpted carpet, that my husband's best friend Tony said best work as a covering for his deer blind (lovely green gold sculpted carpet).  The picture on the left below (from original listing) doesn't do it justice.  All three bedrooms had this same carpet, but we re-carpeted all with the same multi-tone beige/light brown frieze carpet, see before and after below.

The main reason I've started this blog though is to keep family and friends updated on our kitchen remodel, which has been in progress for about 2 weeks, but in planning for several months.

Here are some shots of the current kitchen, with the original dark wood cabinets with centered handles.  Although the appliances were updated to black about 8 years ago, we still have a light green Formica countertop, an avocado green sink and range hood.  Also note the fluorescent lighting, and drop ceiling from 8' to 7' in the main part of the kitchen, to make room for the ceiling panel sectioned lighting.

Next post, I'll show you our progress to-date on the kitchen tear-out, and where we're at on our new layout versus the pictures above, as well as some details on the new cabinets, countertops, appliances and other details planned for our new kitchen!

...we're now on day 7 without a kitchen, I'm doing dishes in the bathroom sink, our microwave is sitting on our dryer, and our fridge is in our office/laundry area...and we can't wait to see it all come back together!

Best, Marianne
